PROJECTS
Legoland – Windsor, United Kingdom
As part of several ongoing projects over a 5 year period Themed Structures
was responsible for the design, development and construction of Legoland
Windsor’s star attraction, The Knights’ Dragon Coaster. Comprising
of a 3 minute 20 sec dark ride and thrill ride experience in one, the
entire ride was designed in, around and through a full size working medieval
castle built in Lego block style. All internal theming elements were undertaken
by Themed Structures and comprised of an interactive story with Lego characters
setting the scene before plunging the rider into a hair-raising roller
coaster. The finished castle occupied a floor space of 200ft by 100ft
and stands almost 50ft high. The castle consists of two levels accessible
by stairs and ramps which serve as queue lines access to the ride within
the castle walls. Working in conjunction with bespoke ride manufacturers
WGH, Ltd, Themed Structures developed a complete custom fit ride experience
fully integrated to the castle structure. The Knights’ Dragon Coaster
is still one of Legoland Windsor premier attractions and has be running
for more than 8 seasons.
This was one of more than six major projects completed for Legoland Windsor
during this five year period.
Celebration
City’ Lazer Wall Show, Branson, Missouri, U.S.A
In 2003 Hersham Family Entertainment LLC approached TSI to build a new
kind of attraction in their already successful park, Celebration City.
Working closely with , Architects, Structural Engineers and the clients
TSI custom built a XX ft by XX ft rock wall in the style of the indigenous
Ozark rock so as to look as natural as possible. The Wall was designed
to be used as a lazer, firework, music and water show that would mark
the end of each day in the park with a nightly performance at 10pm. Over
11 weeks TSI developed a structural system and finish aesthetic that allow
the lazer and water show to reach it’s full potential. The ‘Lazer
Wall’ as it was dubbed is surrounded by green areas to allow people
to sit and watch a truly all senses exploding experience. The show also
incorporated fireworks and music and is now one of Branson’s most
dramatic open air attractions that draws hundreds of people every night.
Harvest
Bible Chapel – Camp Harvest, Michigan, U.S.A
After completing several projects for Chicago area Church group Harvest
Bible Chapel TSI was consulted to design and construct a fully functional
log cabin building as part of the church’s summer and winter camp
and retreat programs. The building is set on a private 600 acre forest
site in the wilds of Michigan. The log cabin is fully insualted, has air
conditioning as well as full plumbing and catering facilities. It is used
as a communal teaching, study and play area for the visitors to the camp.
TSI was responsible for the aesthetics of both the inside and the exterior
of the cabin that would nestle subtly into the landscape but be large
enough to accommodate over 200 people at any one time. As part of the
brief TSI consulted many local references and documented examples of log
cabin architecture to develop a believable building on such a large scale.
The cabin also boasts a large basement play area complete with HVAC and
wash facilities as well as it’s own ‘L’ shaped climbing
wall through both floors of the cabin, custom made by TSI to accommodate
age ranges from 8 to 16 year old children. The climbing wall is complete
with a viewing balcony, safety matting and belay equipment for safe instruction
and fun.
Titanic
– The Legend Continues, Branson, Missouri
As part of a 6 month project TSI was the principal contractor in charge
of developing and constructing from a concept visual, all of the intrinsic
elements that brought this façade to a realistic spectacle.
By using a combination of historical documentation and source materials,
originally ship builders’ plans from Harland and Wolf and specifically
calculated Architectural/engineering blueprints, TSI was able to produce
an almost exact historic replica of the Titanic’s hull with all
of its details and identifying elements.
The ship was produced as a 50% scale replica comprising of the first half
of the ship from the bow back. The finished Titanic stands over 80ft tall
from ground level and over 200ft long. In addition to the ship, TSI designed
and developed an Iceberg into which the original Titanic crashed. Again
by consulting historical literature and dated source material every effort
was made to reproduce an iceberg as precise a replica to the real iceberg
the Titanic was believed to have struck. The iceberg was developed with
steel engineers to serve as a fully immersive experience entrance to the
Titanic: The Legend Continues attraction.
Titanic: The Legend Continues is now a landmark site and is the most photographed
attraction in Branson, MO history.
Harvest
Bible Chapel – Elgin Campus, Illinois, U.S.A
After working with Harvest Bible Chapel (HBC) on two previous projects
TSI was proud to work on the newly completed Elgin Campus. Beginning in
July of 2007 and working on a rolling program that was to culminate with
the grand opening in September, TSI was recruited to produce several interior
and exterior aesthetic components to compliment the structure. The new
extension is part of an ongoing plan by HBC to offer a new worship and
learning centre for members of the church. On the exterior TSI replicated
some it’s earlier work at Camp Harvest by producing four 40ft stone
columns that serve as an impressive main entrance to the centre. Upon
entering the main lobby members are greeting by welcome desks and registration
areas that have been detailed in a cut Indian red stone tiles, used a
recreation of the cut stone tiles on the existing building as a means
of uniting the new and the old structures together. As part of the new
worship centre HBC have a very progressive children’s program and
was keen to extend this by making several interactive learning areas for
a variety of different ages. TSI designed and built 3 different learning
rooms that would introduce children to the bible and more specifically
Old Testament stories, such as, Jonah and the fish, Noah’s Ark and
so on. TSI achieved this by creating fun environments that reflected the
stories for children to play and learn in. The main worship arena was
detailed with the same cut stone as the main entrance. These stone panels
flank the main stage and contain warm lighting adding a soft ambience
and enhancing the feeling of strength of the community members.
Katmandu
– The House of Katmandu, Mallorca, Spain
From an initial concept visual of the project TSI was consulted to design
and develop a strategic plan to feasibly construct The House of Katmandu.
Over a rolling program lasting almost 9 months TSI was given the task
of producing all the external theming of the building façade with
additional landscaping elements and individual features that are integrated
into the ground of the site. Using the existing style, defined by the
concept artist’s work, the storyline which is intrinsically linked
to the style of the building and our own research into Tibetan and Asian
architecture and culture TSI was able to design and construct an authentic
upside down building with a pseudo Tibetan feel that is simply breathtaking.
The attraction comprises of an interactive walk-through adventure with
memorable characters, a full service bar and restaurant and a gift store
all housed within the heavily detailed and brightly adorned building.
In its short time since completion The House of Katmandu has already become
the second most photographed site in Mallorquin history (secondly only
to Palma’s world famous Cathedral) and is featured by many leading
tour operators for vacationers.
